Beaconsfield Publishers Ltd was formed in late 1978 after its founder and present owner had been made redundant / fired from a venerable mainline and now sadly defunct British publishing house. Our objective from the outset was to specialise in books for the conventional health care market, covering medicine, nursing and patient care, with a parallel output in the complementary field of homeopathic medicine, including veterinary homeopathy.
One other objective at the time was to see if it was possible to limit the list to a total of 20 titles with a strong backlist character, producing new editions as time and their relevant markets dictated. After 29 years we now actually have 36 titles in print -- these are either original books that still earn their keep or else fully reworked new editions of existing titles.
We produce about two or three new titles or fully reworked new editions each year, with the greater part of the printing bill taken up by reprints of existing titles. We have only had to put one book out of print -- there are no business doctorates and no fortunes to be earned this way, but in practice it turns out to be viable. It is also appreciated by authors, and buyers in general, who like to feel that things don't necessarily all have to vanish without warning. We still keep closely to our defined target readerships.
